Something not working?

System freezing, apps crashing, battery life sucks, phone heating up?

Here are some basic troubleshooting tips for those not very tech savvy (yet)

Please try this before making yet another thread (and save yourself from being yelled at and picked on for the rest of your life in this community)

If you still have problems just reply in this thread, we'll be happy to help

Now, here is step one: turn it off, wait for a minute and turn it on again.

Really?

Yes, really, a lot of problems can be solved by switching your phone off once in a while, it clears your phones memory from unwanted errors/corrupted data.

So, always do this first!

That didn't work Mr. Smartypants, now what?

That depends on your problem really, if it is just one app using a lot of battery (and heating up your device) or behaving bad otherwise you may try this:

  • Go to system settings -> Apps
  • Choose the app giving you problems
  • Clear the app cache and data.

If this still doesn't work you may uninstall the app, reinstall it after a restart of your phone, you may also try to clear system cache as described below ⬇️

Freezing, lagging, heating? Then the first thing you should do is:

Clear your system cache.

Always do this before running OTA updates or flashing a beta or whatever!

If your phone is freezing, lagging, heating or otherwise behaving erratic chances are your system cache got corrupted. This often happens with lousy programmed apps (Facebook!) and/or after system updates.

There are several ways to clear system cache, this is the best one:

  • Shut down your phone
  • Press power and volume down simultaneously
  • Choose your preferred language
  • Choose "Wipe data and cache, BE CAREFUL NOW!
  • Choose "Wipe cache", DO NOT CLEAR DATA!
  • Choose yes on continuing.
  • Reboot your phone.

If nothing else is not working the only solution may be too perform a factory reset.

This will bring your phone back to the state it left the factory.

Factory reset

Always backup all your Stuff before doing this!

  • Shut down your phone
  • Press power and volume down simultaneously
  • Choose your preferred language
  • Choose "Wipe data and cache, BE CAREFUL NOW!
  • Choose Factory reset -> did you really backup everything?
  • Last chance... No turning back here...
  • "Data and cache will be wiped, continue?"
  • Choose "Yes" (backed up data, you're sure?)
  • Reboot after
  • Start setting up your phone again.

Wifi not working

  • Try switching off the router and your phone.
  • Restart router, after it is done start your phone
  • Wipe your network settings on your phone.
  • Do you have a battery saving App? It may kill your wifi...
  • The WiFi Fixer App may come in handy

Problems charging*

  • Make sure the charging block and cables are properly and completely inserted.
  • You may try a different cable if you have one
  • Phone won't turn on after being fully discharged: can normally be resolved by ensuring you are using an official charger and official cable and leaving it for at least 10 minutes

This next part is there to get you to understand batteries better, why it heats sometimes, how to get things cool and optimise your system to make the battery last longer.

First of all, if you have a new phone, if you just did a fresh reinstall or have a major system update and it heats up, be patient, the Android system needs time to optimise apps, build up cache and then settle. For that your phone needs to be plugged in and fully charged. Sometimes that may take up to a week.

Read this thread, Noobies be warned, it's quite the read

Also, a new battery is not at its full capacity when new, basic rule is to give it one to two weeks, always keep the charge somewhere between 15-85%. Draining or overcharging to 100% over night will make your battery deteriorate much faster.

Before installing any system update make sure to delete the system cache beforehand, if there's a mismatch afterwards it can really drain your battery like crazy.

Here are some more tips to make your charge last longer l

Check your battery stats. First thing to do is go check this, see what is using the most juice.

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Usage and you’ll see a list of the apps and services that are wearing down your battery.

There are many apps that run in the background, and often that may be unnecessary, so you can turn them off.

Delete resource hogging apps
Especially the Facebook apps are notorious for eating away your battery and data plan whilst stealing your personal data. I consider this spyware, because it basically is. You can simply use your browser to use Facebook, also, delete the community app, you know it's crap

If you can't delete the app you can usually switch it off.

Switch on that battery saver now
That will kill most unnecessary background data slurpers.

Turn off data/WiFi/bluetooth/NFC/location services/Automatic updates
At home or work use wifi when you can switch off data, wifi uses less battery than data always on, it saves you money as well. All these connection services can be real battery hogs. Also turn off automatic updates on Google Play or other app stores.

Lower screen brightness and refresh rate
I often see people using their phone on full brightness all the time, this really sucks the life of your battery. High refresh rates eat battery but are not always necessary.

Play games on lower settings.
Playing games is very demanding, and it will heat up that battery (and kill it in the end)

You really don't need to play PUBG with all settings on full, really. Lower them to an acceptable level (it will also save you battery life but also a lot of data on the go)

Turn off animations, haptic feedback, live widgets and backgrounds, visual effects.

OK Google, live wallpapers and animations are nice, but if you can live without the bells and whistles just turn it all of. Have a simple static wallpaper, switch off haptic feedback and Google services, have one less eavesdropper on the go...

Go to Settings > Developer options, tap it a few times and then disable “Window animation scale,” “Transition animation scale,” and “Animator duration scale.”

Also, (if you're lazy) use Greenify
